Sasol Officially Launches Three Community Projects in Wentworth 07 October 2020

Durban, South Africa – Yesterday was a special day to the Wentworth community where Sasol officially launched three Wentworth community projects in an event held at the Blue Roof Life Centre in Austerville. Sasol unveiled refurbished classes of the Wentworth Secondary School; declared open for operation the Sasol donated mobile science laboratory operated by CASME which will be serving Wentworth high schools; and handed over the Sasol HIV|AID testing and counseling implemented through Zoe Life.

Speaking at the event opened by the ward councilor, Aubrey Snyman and attended by the Wentworth community organizations and High Schools’ Principals Sipho Maseko the Sasol Vice President officiating the launch said: “We are grateful to the South Durban Basin Community Development Trust, Frank, and Melanie, thank you very much for bringing this community needs to our attention so passionately”. He added: “Our role in society is a catalyst for change and we would like to continue contributing to making a change in societies and communities in which we live and value chains within which we do business”.

In 2018 Sasol committed to supporting the Wentworth community with repairs of the Wentworth Secondary School following the ravaging storms that took place in this area during October 2017. Sasol prioritized this refurbishment because it holds education in high esteem and is convinced children will hence be propelled to want to be educated so that they can escape the poverty cycles the communities are engulfed in.

Sasol has contributed to the dedicated operation of the Mobile Science Laboratory to service the Durban South Basin schools. The objective of this Mobile Science Laboratory is to support the school system towards improving the results in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics subjects. These are the subjects that are needed in most industries, such as Sasol.

Although today’s immediate health threat is the Covid-19 outbreak, HIV/AIDS stubbornly remains one of the major killers of our youth. It is for this reason that Sasol committed to continuing to support the work of Zoe Life which is focussed on testing and counseling the youth so that they may live fulfilling and long lives.

This year, Sasol is celebrating the 70th year of existence that started with Sasol leveraging technologies and the expertise of its employees. Sasol developed and commercialized technologies, built and operated world-scale facilities to produce a range of high-value product streams, including liquid fuels, chemicals, and low-carbon electricity. Sasol remains part of social communities and value chains in which we do business and create value.
